The story also has echoes of The Silmarillion, with the worshipped tree dying and devastating a land. The Eborans and their culture have shades of Atlantis, a highly evolved society, dying. The plot could quite easily have descended into a trope-y fantasy cliché. The antagonists are the Jure’lia, or the worm people, who are actually terrifying and, guess what, they’re returning. Couple that with the devastating disease, the Crimson Flux, which came from consuming human blood and the Eboran race has been decimated. Long lived thanks to the sap of their tree god, Ygseril, which died at the end of the Eighth Rain leaving the Eborans to slowly die out. The story starts with the Eborans, an Atlantian-type of being known for their long life, high culture, unique look and, eventually, desperate, war mongering bloodsucking. At its heart, the story is a very simple one, although it is told in a very new and fascinating way. The characters are interesting and well written as was the story. It has everything I enjoy in fantasy, an epic past and future with an intimate present.

Normally, I regret downloading books promoted on iBooks (*cough*GildedCage*cough*) but in this instance, thankfully, I have discovered the first book in what seems to be a very promising series. I read the blurb and thought it sounded interesting so I decided to give it a go. The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams is the first in the Winnowing Flames trilogy and is a book that I hadn’t even heard about until I was browsing iBooks one day and I found it as a free download.
